To celebrate the construction of the New Wear Crossing, Diamond Hall Junior School children were set a holiday project on the theme of ‘Bridges’.

They were given a challenge to produce a piece of work and present it in any way they wished. The response was fantastic, with an excellent range of bridge models, books, poems, stories, artwork and photographs.

After the closing date, the entries were judged by Councillor Michael Mordey and Chris Taylor from the construction team. Both judges were really impressed with the quality of entries and the winner was Sophie Harper in Year 5, who produced a series of nine different bridges from around the world, made from a mix of collages, prints, stencils, wax and paint. Sophie said, “I really enjoyed doing all the pictures – I loved doing the dabbing and the dotted bridge.”

Runners-up included Mark Anderson from Year 3 and Mark Simion from Year 6, who produced a structure and a pop-up book.

Headteacher Mrs Bennett said, “We are so proud of the excellent range of entries. Being so close to the new bridge, we are really pleased it is helping to inspire the next generation of engineers, artists and authors.”
