International Education Week 2017

Pupils from Diamond Hall Junior Academy in Sunderland are bringing the world into the classroom this week with a series of activities to celebrate International Education Week 2017.

The British Council celebrates the week every year, promoting the benefits of international and intercultural experience to a huge community of teachers, school leaders and their students in the UK and across the world.

This year the British Council is focusing on the importance of international skills – particularly language learning.

Diamond Hall Junior Academy is focused on enriching the understanding of languages and culture in school. This links directly to our rights respecting ethos in which article 31 states that all children can take part in a range of cultural activities.

Vicky Gough, Schools Adviser at the British Council, said: “Understanding other cultures and languages has always been important for the UK’s place in the world but now, as Britain repositions itself on the world stage, it is absolutely vital. If we are to ensure that our young people – and the country as whole – keep ahead in the global race, we need to champion language and other international skills as invaluable for a generation growing up in an increasingly connected world.”
