Christingle celebrations

All children at Diamond Hall Junior Academy have celebrated Christingles this week with separate services for each year group at St Mary Magdalene Church.

The service, led by Father Skelton involved Christmas songs and carols as well as prayers for people we think about at this time of year. Our generous children also brought in spare change to donate to the Children's Society.

Christingle celebrations are named after the Christingles that are lit during the service. They are made from an orange decorated with red tape, sweets and a candle. Each piece of the Christingle holds special symbolism to help children understand the importance of Jesus and the Gospel, and its relevance at Christmas time.

  • The orange represents the world

  • The red ribbon (or tape) symbolises the love and blood of Christ

  • The sweets and dried fruit represent all of God’s creations

  • The lit candle represents Jesus’s light in the world, bringing hope to people living in darkness

It was a truly special ceremony that made us all think about the true meaning of Christmas.
