This week, Mia, Tommy, Poppy, Christopher and Mr Charlton had the honour of meeting Prince William and the Duchess Of Cambridge, Kate, at the new Northern Spire bridge in Sunderland.

Reporters Tommy and Christopher fill us in on the details:

On Wednesday 21 February 2018, four children left school with Mr Charlton to visit the new Northern Spire bridge. They were extremely lucky to be invited to the opening where they met the future King and Queen (Kate and William). The Prince and his wife had visited the new Fire Station arts centre in the town centre earlier in the day before arriving to the construction site of the Northern Spire.

There were also three other schools invited including: High field, Northern saints and Castletown.

Poppy and Mia added: "They were lovely people and it was amazing to have a conversation with them. We were even on the news! We were so excited we almost forgot our etiquette!

"We could definitely feel their royal aura among us. They seemed to have an particular interest in girls getting into engineering, and they also told a few jokes about how terrible Sunderland was at football."

Northern Spire is the first bridge to be built across the River Wear in Sunderland for more than 40 years and is on track to open this spring after three years of construction. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were invited along to give their royal seal of approval to Sunderland’s new landmark Northern Spire bridge and we were lucky enough to also be invited.
