4CT had a wonderful day with Bill and Hannah at Beamish last week, learning all about the role of women during World War 1.

The morning began with the ‘women’ at home cooking, cleaning and looking after the house while the ‘men’ worked at Parsons Factory making turbines for the ships. During their shift, war broke out and they went off to train as soldiers.

The 'women’ left their duties at home and went to do the men’s jobs in the factory so production could continue during the war. The ‘men’ learned to march in line, salute and ‘about turn’.

When the war ended, they celebrated by throwing their hats in the air and cheering. The men then returned to the factory to take the jobs back from the women.

The children will use their experiences as a basis for their writing this week, some of which may be displayed at Beamish during half term.

Many thanks to Bill and Hannah for a great day and to the Sir Tom Cowie Charitable Trust for continuing to support our visits.
