As part of their topic learning, our Year 6 pupils read ‘In Flanders Fields’ and learnt how to analyse the poem's features and discuss deeper meaning, developing their understanding of the themes and messages behind this famous piece of writing.

They also worked collaboratively in groups to create their own original verses, drawing inspiration from the poem's style and structure. Finishing the unit, Year 6 confidently performed their poems to their classmates, showcasing their creativity, teamwork and speaking skills. We are so proud of their thoughtful ideas and fantastic performances.

Year 6 continued exploring what life was like in the trenches during World War One.

The children impressed everyone with their fantastic recall of prior learning, using their historical knowledge to write powerful, first-hand accounts in the form of letters home from the trenches. To make their work even more authentic, the pupils carefully aged their letters, giving them the appearance of having travelled through the challenging conditions of the trenches themselves. The finished letters provided a vivid insight into the experiences of soldiers and showcased both the children’s creativity and historical understanding.

Well done, Year 6!
